Nigerian singer Tems has kicked against being labelled an Afrobeats artist, insisting that she considers her music to be rooted in R&B.
The Grammy-winning singer made the clarification while discussing how her music is categorised by blogs and media platforms.
According to Tems, she identifies her music as R&B whenever she releases new songs, but said blogs often label it Afrobeats because she is an African artist.
“I’m not an Afrobeats artist. When I release my music, I classify it as R&B, but blogs keep calling it Afrobeats,” she said.
Tems expressed concern over what she described as a common practice of categorising music from Africa as Afrobeats regardless of the actual sound or genre.
“I’ve noticed that any music that comes out of Africa is automatically categorized as Afrobeats,” she added.
